Varvara Gracheva breezed through the two qualifying rounds for Cincinnati, with easy wins over Mihaela Buzarnescu and Iva Jovic. Gracheva also qualified for the Canadian Open last week but lost in the first-round to Lin Zhu. Her best result on the WTA Tour was in June as she won five matches on the bounce, reaching the semi-finals but losing to youngster Alexandra Eala.
Katie Volynets was also on the end of a first-round defeat last week in Montreal, losing to Aoi Ito in three sets. The American has just one main draw victory from her last four tournaments on the WTA Tour. She did make a final in Oeiras on the ITF circuit over three months ago but that was on clay. She reached the quarter-finals in Auckland at the start of the year but Volynets is struggling for consistency right now.
Gracheva leads the head-to-head 1-0, beating Volynets in the semi-finals of the ATX Open two years ago. There are just two places separating them in the rankings and they hold almost identical win-loss records this season. This has all the makings of a three set match.
