Varvara Gracheva got through qualifying to enter the main draw in Wuhan. In the first stage, her opponent Ajla Tomljanovic retired but she then produced a brilliant performance to go on and defeat Guadalajara Open champion Iva Jovic after going a set down. It had been tough going for Gracheva up to that point, as she had failed to make it out of qualifying for the US Open, Korea Open and China Open. She is without a main draw victory since her run to the quarter-finals of Cincinnati in August, her most impressive result of the season by far.
She now faces Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in round one. The Spaniard ended a four match losing streak in Beijing as she defeated Jaqueline Cristian and Dayana Yastremska to get through to round three, where she would lose to world number five Mirra Andreeva in straight sets. The Spaniard is still ranked inside the top 50 of the world rankings and has made three quarter-final appearances on the WTA Tour this season, including at the Canadian Open.
Gracheva will have momentum with her from qualifying, but Bouzas Maneiro has won their two previous meetings and will be expected to come out on top once more.
