Varvara Gracheva has some momentum heading into Wimbledon after a run to the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International. She came through the qualifiers and won four matches in a row, along with a Barbora Krejcikova withdrawal in the quarter-final, to make the last four. She lost a close battle with Alexandra Eala. That was a second loss to the young Filipino in a matter of weeks as Eala defeated her in Nottingham Open qualifying, her other grass court event.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich won all of her matches in qualifying without the drop of a set to enter the main draw here. The Belarusian also got through the qualifying of the Nottingham Open but lost in the first-round to Zhu Lin. Her best run at Wimbledon saw her make the fourth-round in 2018.
Gracheva beat Sasnovich in their only previous meeting, a qualifier for the Cincinnati Open last year. There’s just three places separating these two in the world rankings and they’re both in decent form, but we edge towards Gracheva making the second-round of the event for a third year in a row.
