Valentin Vacherot vs Tallon Griekspoor prediction

Valentin Vacherot’s stunning run in Shanghai continues but it is perhaps his opponent in the round of 16 that is the real surprise of the tournament so far. 

The Monegasque qualifier took another scalp as he followed up wins over Laslo  Djere and Alexander Bublik with a 6-0 3-1 win over Tomas Machac, with the out of sorts Czech forced to retire early. 

The world number 204 will now take on Tallon Griekspoor for a place in the last eight after world number two and red-hot favourite for the title, Jannik Sinner retired with cramp trailing 7-6 5-7 2-3. 

It was lucky number seven for the Dutchman as he posted a first victory over the Italian to finally have a say in a head-to-head where he had lost the initial six meetings.

Vacherot will feel this represents a major chance to maintain the push here, which may not have been the case if he'd come up against Sinner. That said, Griekspoor is playing at the high level that had been eluding him for several tournaments here, and if the serve and plus-one forehand fire, he will expect to progress.
