Valentin Royer vs Mariano Navone prediction
Valentin Royer is raring to go for the Shanghai Open after the best run of his career over the past few months. He won his first two matches at Grand Slam level, advancing to the second-round of both Wimbledon and the US Open. He then made further strides in Hangzhou in September as he defeated Andrey Rublev, Learner Tien and Corentin Moutet to make his first final on the ATP Tour. He would lose to Alexander Bublik, but Royer is now at his highest ranking of 76 and qualified for this tournament with two straight set wins.
Mariano Navone, by contrast, is without a win in his last three matches. He lost in the first-round of the US Open and has followed that up with a round one exit in Hangzhou and a loss in the first stage of qualifying for the Japan Open last week. The Argentine is primarily a clay court specialist and his best results this season, which include a Challenger title win in Braunschweig, were on that surface.
It’s hard to look past Royer for this one, considering his current level, and there’s a strong chance of him wrapping this one up in straight sets.
