Valentin Royer won his first-round match at Wimbledon for the second successive year as he came from a set down to beat home favourite Harry Wendelken. The Frenchman, who took a set off Novak Djokovic in their second-round match at Roland Garros last month, won 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-3.
He will now face world number three Alexander Zverev in round two. Zverev got his Wimbledon campaign up and running on Centre Court with a four set win over Alexander Blockx. The French Open champion was pushed throughout but produced his best serving when it mattered to seal a 6-4 6-7 (8) 7-6 (5) 7-6 (0) victory. Zverev struck 21 aces and had a first serve percentage of 83%.
Zverev leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a straight sets win at the Shanghai Masters last year. Royer lacks the weapons on this surface, and Zverev should be able to create more opportunities in his return games.
