The world number 24 will now face another American in the shape of the towering Reilly Opelka, who battled to a 7-6 6-7 6-3 success over lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp.
This could well involve another tie-break or two and although Humbert has really rekindled some form here, former world number 17 Opelka is eyeing a return to the top 50 and if he serves well in conditions that suit, he will be a major obstacle for the higher ranked star.
This is another one that could have one or two dips in concentration at both ends of the court but it could go either way in a decider as Opelka will offer more resistance than a tired-looking Fritz.
