Ugo Humbert got his Stockholm Open campaign off to a solid start as he defeated 2021 Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in straight sets. The Frenchman, who reached the Paris Masters last year and already has an indoor title to his name this season, edged a tight first set and broke the Berrettini serve twice in the second to win 7-6 6-3.
He will now go up against Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian advanced to his third quarter-final of the season after defeating Aleksandar Kovacevic. Sonego crucially saved a set point at 6-5 down in the first set before going on to win it on a tiebreak. The second was far more comfortable as he found his rhythm to go on and win 7-6 6-1 after one hour and 24 minutes.
They have met on eight occasions, with Humbert leading the head-to-head 5-3. He has also won their two encounters this season, including a match indoors in Marseille, with Humbert defeating the Italian 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals en route to the title. He is one of the favourites for the title in Stockholm and will be expected to come through this one.
