Ugo Humbert was tested by Mattia Bellucci in his first-round match, but he still advanced to the next stage of the tournament. There was nothing to separate the pair after two sets, with each player winning a tiebreak apiece, but Humbert did edge ahead in the final set to win 7-6 (5) 6-7 (1) 6-4. He reached the semi-finals of Queen’s Club last week.
His next opponent is Jenson Brooksby. Last year’s runner up began his campaign with a win over Aleksandar Vukic. The American struggled on serve at the beginning of the match as he was broken in his first two service games, but he then began to dominate the encounter as he won 7-5 6-1 after one hour and 24 minutes.
Brooksby leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 1-0 on grass. This is a rematch of last year’s semi-final, which saw Brooksby come from a set down to win. He is not performing at quite the same level this time around, and that could give Humbert some encouragement.
