Holger Rune will hope to make it a ‘high five’ against Ugo Humbert and book a spot in the round of 16 in Shanghai.
The Dane owns a 4-0 lead over the Frenchman in their head-to-head and hadn’t dropped a set until their most recent clash when he triumphed 5-7 6-4 7-5 at Indian Wells earlier this year.
Rune looked sharp as he beat Sebastian Baez in straight sets in the second round while Humbert posted a 6-3 7-6 victory over the struggling Jordan Thompson.
Humbert hasn’t been firing on all cylinders and that win will be a welcome tonic, but he will need to find another gear to be to solve the puzzle that has befuddled him when trying to beat Rune.
The 10th seed will rightly be the favourite to see off the 21st seed and from the match-up through to form, it’s hard to think otherwise here.
