Ugo Humbert has competed in just one tournament since Wimbledon, making the third-round in Cincinnati before a defeat to Frances Tiafoe. The Frenchman reached the fourth-round of the Australian Open at the start of the year but has struggled to have a similar impact at the other outdoor hard court tournaments so far in 2025. He could only make the second-round here last year.
Adam Walton was unable to make a deep run in Winston-Salem last time out, as he lost to Botic van de Zandschulp in the first-round despite going a set up. The Australian has still enjoyed some fine victories over the past month, as he got through to the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open and defeated former world number one Daniil Medvedev on his way to the third-round in Cincinnati.
Humbert is the favourite but must be aggressive against Walton, who will look to grind away and extend the rallies from the start, while also forcing the Frenchman into errors. Humbert should have enough to pull through but this is not the easiest of first-round matches.
