Ugo Blanchet qualified for the tournament after two wins in qualifying. He squandered a match point in the second set against Ilia Simakin but still managed to get the job done and then defeated Rinky Hijikata relatively comfortably. The Frenchman’s highlight of the season was at the US Open, as he advanced through the qualifying stages and made it all the way to round three. He is currently ranked 151 in the world but is still without a win on the ATP Tour this year.
James Duckworth is also a qualifier, having defeated home favourite Mikhail Kukushkin in the final stage to advance. The Australian’s form has been very poor in recent weeks and months, with first-round losses in Jingshan and Jinan on the Challenger Tour, along with a failure to qualify for the Shanghai Masters and the Chengdu Open during the Asian swing. He has only got past the second-round of a tournament on three occasions this season, both on the ATP and Challenger Tour.
Blanchet will be desperate to get a tour-level win under his belt before the end of the season, and this is a very presentable opportunity against an out-of-form Duckworth.
