Ugo Blanchet qualified for the tournament after winning his three matches in qualifying. He defeated Jaime Faria 7-5 6-4 in the final stage to advance. His recent form has been encouraging too, as he qualified for his first Masters tournament of the season in Toronto and then went on to make the semi-finals of a Challenger event in Grodzisk Mazowiecki a week later. He is currently ranked 184 in the world and this will be his main-draw US Open debut.
Fabian Marozsan also showed some promise on the hard courts as he made the third-round of the Canadian Open at the start of the month, defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime along the way. He got through to round two of Cincinnati but then lost to former world number three Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Blanchet will be raring to go and is likely to make this competitive early on, but Marozsan’s variety and consistent power should help him to overcome the qualifier.
