Despite only entering the draw as a lucky loser, Ugo Blanchet got through to the next stage of the Open Occitanie after beating Andrea Vavassori in straight sets. The Frenchman broke for the first time right at the end of the first set to take the lead, before reeling off five games in a row as he coasted towards victory. Blanchet was broken when serving for the match at 5-1, but still closed it out to win 6-4 6-3.
He will now face Arthur Fils. The 21-year-old marked his return to the tour with a win over fellow countryman Valentin Royer. Fils, who had not featured since the Canadian Open at the start of last August, came from 5-3 down in the first set to go in front after winning the tiebreak. He dropped the next set but raced clear in the decider to win 7-6 (7) 6-7 (4) 6-2.
Fils seemed to be moving well on his return and is capable of getting through this match in straight sets.
