Tommy Paul vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina prediction
Former semi-finalist Tommy Paul will be aiming to maintain his flawless record against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
The American leads their head-to-head 4-0 and won 6-1 6-1 6-1 at this very tournament last year.
It will be the second time Paul has played Foki at Melbourne Park after sinking the Spaniard in a five-set thriller of great contrast back in 2023, when the 28-year-old went on to reach the last four.
The 19th seed has made straight-forward progress without dropping a set so far this year as he bids to defend points from his quarter-final surge 12 months ago.
Foki’s path has been more of a rollercoaster as he came good in a thrilling climax to beat big-serving Reilly Opelka 6-3 7-6 5-7 4-6 6-4.
The Spanish 14th seed is aiming to make it back-to-back appearances in the round of 16, which is his career best showing at the tournament.
Paul clearly has the gameplan and know-how to defeat Foki but it’s likely to be far more competitive than last year’s affair when the American dropped just three games.
It could well be ADF’s turn to finally defeat Paul, but he will need to do something a bit different given the match-up hasn’t suited him in the past.
Foki is the higher ranked player so we think there's value in the mini upset here with Paul having a mental edge given his previous dominance.
