The Argentine dominated the breaker to go in front, and looked set for victory after breaking in the fourth game of the second. Faria would break when Etcheverry was serving for the match, only for the eighth seed to break again in the next service game, sealing a 7-6 (1) 6-4 victory.
He now faces Jaime Faria. The Portuguese ended two-time defending champion Sebastian Baez’s run in round one and continued his progress after a win over Damir Dzumhur. Faria lost the first three games of the match but crucially broke as Dzumhur was serving for the set. He also controlled the tiebreak and broke in the latter stages of the second to win 7-6 (1) 6-4.
Etcheverry has more pedigree on this surface and will be eyeing up a first final of the campaign here, though he will need to sustain his level against Faria.
