Tomas Martin Etcheverry suffered a first-round loss at the Libema Open but fared a lot better in Halle. He easily brushed part Pedro Martinez and then won a dramatic three-set match with Andrey Rublev to reach his first ever quarter-final on grass. He couldn’t keep the run going as he fell to a defeat to Karen Khachanov and then lost in the first-round of the Mallorca Championships despite taking the first set against Roberto Bautista Agut.
He takes on Jack Pinnington Jones who is making his Grand Slam debut after being handed a wildcard. The Brit suffered early defeats in Birmingham, Nottingham and Eastbourne. However, there was a highlight on the grass as Pinnington Jones won four matches in a row to make the final in Ilkley. This was his first final on the Challenger Tour but he lost in three sets to Tristan Schoolkate.
Etcheverry is not best suited to grass but he’s still made the second-round of Wimbledon on his last two appearances and showed his quality by making the quarter-finals of Halle. He will be favoured to beat the inexperienced Pinnington Jones on his debut.
