Tomas Martin Etcheverry went close at his home tournament in Buenos Aires but lost out in the semi-finals. He defeated Andrea Pellegrino in the first-round and then got through an epic three hour battle with Roman Andres Burruchaga. He advanced from the quarter-finals after win over Alejandro Tabilo but he lost in the last four to compatriot and eventual champion Francisco Cerundolo.

He now turns his attention to Rio and faces Francisco Comesana in round one. He lost in the first-round of the Argentina Open after a defeat to Camilo Ugo Carabelli. He also was defeated in the second-round of the Rosario Challenger and has not enjoyed a South American clay court season he would have hoped for so far.

Etcheverry leads the ATP head-to-head 1-0 after a victory in Hamburg last year and he’s in the better form of the two Argentinians right now. Comesana can still be a threat on this surface, but Etcheverry is the favourite.
