Tomas Martin Etcheverry will attempt to translate superb clay form back to hard courts at Indian Wells.

The Argentine moved from just outside the top 60 to 31 in the world thanks to an excellent South American swing on the dirt, culminating in the title in Rio last time out. 

First up in the desert, the 29th seed faces Denis Shapovalov for a second time after the Canadian beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 3-6 6-4.

Shapo won their previous encounter in Madrid back in 2024 and is a match for anyone on his day. 

Etcheverry may actually like the conditions at Indian Wells given they aren’t too dissimilar to some clay courts, but this is not a clear-cut shout and we wouldn’t be surprised to see a tie-break and/or a third set here.
