Tomas Machac reached his first quarter-final of the season after a straight sets win over Quentin Halys. Machac was largely untroubled during the match, breaking four times to win 6-4 6-2 after one hour and 12 minutes. Machac is yet to drop a set at the event so far.
He will face Jaume Munar in the next round of the tournament. Munar came from a set down to beat Francisco Cerundolo in his previous match. The Spaniard crucially broke at the end of the second and began to serve a lot better as he controlled the decider to win 3-6 7-5 6-4.
Machac is always a strong player in these conditions, but he’ll have to be wary of the threat of Munar, who has improved a lot on this surface within the space of the last year. This could head into a three set match, with little to separate the two players overall.
