He now goes up against Alex Michelsen in the second-round. Michelsen will want to get back to winning ways after a disappointing defeat in Washington to Dan Evans. The American struggled to create opportunities on the Briton’s serve and committed seven double faults during his second-round match, losing 6-4 6-4. The world number 34 needs to recapture some of the form on hard courts which took him to the fourth-round of the Australian Open in January and the semi-finals of the Delray Beach Open a month later.
Barrios Vera edged a tight match with Monfils but he’s likely to find it tougher against Michelsen, who will be determined to produce a much better performance this time around. The American will be a clear favourite to win.
