WHO ARE THE LEADING MEDAL CONTENDERS?

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah’s rivalry in recent years has extended into this year’s games with Thompson defeating Fraser-Pryce in a shock victory in the 100 metres to make it back-to-back gold medals in that event following her Rio 2016 triumph.

Thompson-Herah is likely to come into the race as the favourite with her season best of 21.66 seconds a ceiling that nobody else in the race currently looks set to reach. The world number two Shaunae Miller-Ubo of the Bahamas and Ivorian 100 metre star Marie-Josee Ta Lou will both come into this event in good form as well.

WHO COULD CAUSE A SURPRISE?

The potential surprise for this event could come in the shape and form of Christine Mboma of Namibia. The unranked 18 year-old ran a season and personal best of 21.97 seconds in the semi-finals of this event. That time is a world under-20 record.

TSZ’S PREDICTION

Despite the impressive performances of Mboma and the relentless consistency of Fraser-Pryce, it remains likely that neither will come out on top for the gold medal. Elaine Thompson-Herah will become a four-time Olympic gold medalist with a victory here and that is the expected outcome.

TSZ Tip: ELAINE THOMPSON-HERAH (Jamaica) to win
