THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Alex de Minaur is back where he belongs inside the top 20 on the ATP tour after some excellent form over the last few months, and he would be higher still had his run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month awarded any points. The Aussie claimed the sixth ATP title of his career at the Atlanta Open late last month and he beat Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov at the Canada Masters last week before defeat to red-hot Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16. This should be a reasonably comfortable opener for De Minaur against Henri Laaksonen, although they shared a five-set epic at the Australian Open three years ago in their only previous meeting. World number 102 Laaksonen is at his best on the clay but he played well in the qualifiers this weekend to suggest this could be a little tougher than first appears. Back De Minaur to win outright inside an accumulator, although straight sets should do it in a one-off.
