Toby Samuel enters the round-of-16 stage as a lucky loser. He won his first match in qualifying against Quentin Halys, although he was then defeated by Roland Garros semi-finalist Matteo Arnaldi despite taking the first set. He was handed a wildcard at Queen’s Club last week, but was heavily beaten by fellow Brit Arthur Fry.
Samuel takes on Thiago Agustin Tirante. The Argentine won his first grass court match of the campaign as he beat Hamish Stewart. The 25-year-old won 7-5 6-2. Tirante is primarily a clay courter, having reached the semi-finals in Houston and the round-of-16 at the Italian Open. He also advanced to the third-round of Roland Garros last month.
Samuel will have home support and can still prove to be a competitive player on grass, but Tirante has the greater pedigree and will be viewed as the favourite to advance to the quarter-finals.
