Thiago Agustin Tirante produced an impressive display to beat Hamad Medjedovic in Shanghai. The Argentine was not broken throughout the match, conceding just the one break point on his way to a 6-4 6-2 victory after one hour and seven minutes. That ended a four-match losing streak for Tirante.

He plays Rafael Jodar next. The Spaniard suffered an early exit at the Japan Open, losing to Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in straight sets. Jodar also lost in comprehensive fashion to Bu Yunchaokete in the first-round of the US Open. It’s been an incredible breakthrough campaign for the 20-year-old this season, with a maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros and a first tour-level title in Marrakesh, though there are signs that his momentum is beginning to fade as the season draws to a close. 

Tirante has performed strongly at the last two Masters 1000 events, reaching the round-of-16 in Montreal and the quarter-finals in Cincinnati. Given Jodar’s patchy form, he will be confident of causing him problems.
