Thiago Agustin Tirante came from a set and a break down to beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second-round of the French Open. The Argentine dropped the first set and was in serious trouble as his opponent broke to go 5-4 up in the second. However, Agustin Tirante broke back immediately and levelled in a tiebreak. The next two sets were straight-forward and he ended up winning 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-1 6-3 after two hours and 54 minutes.
He now takes on Pablo Carreno Busta. The Spaniard advanced after his opponent Thanasi Kokkinakis was forced to retire in the third set. Carreno Busta had won the first set, with Kokkinakis responding in the second. However, the Australian, who has been ravaged by injuries in the past, could not continue after going a break down at the start of the third.
Tirante’s results on clay have been impressive this season, with a semi-final appearance in Houston and a quarter-final in Rio during the Golden Swing. He also reached the round-of-16 at a Masters event for the first time at the Italian Open earlier this month. He will start as the firm favourite.
