Thiago Agustin Tirante continued his brilliant run as he reached his first Masters quarter-final after a win over Jakub Mensik at the Cincinnati Open. Tirante, who defeated 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in round two, dropped the first set but fought back to win 5-7 6-4 6-4. He now joins Francsico Cerundolo as the only active Argentinians to have advanced to the last eight of a Masters 1000 tournament.
He plays Arthur Fils next. The 22-year-old comfortably got past Alex de Minaur in straight sets. Fils won 6-3 6-4 against the fifth seed, and he is now just the second Frenchman to reach five Masters quarter-finals in one season, after Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2012.
Tirante’s aggressive game has caused problems for numerous players this week, but Fils is also an explosive baseliner, as well as a top athlete. The Frenchman has been very consistent this season, and he will be expected to progress to the last four.
