Thiago Agustin Tirante moved into the quarter-finals of the Rio Open after his opponent Francisco Cerundolo was forced to retire midway through their match. Cerundolo, who was the top seed and had just won his home event in Buenos Aires a few days earlier, was struggling physically and decided he could not continue in the second set. Tirante was leading 6-2 3-1 at the time.
He now goes up against Alejandro Tabilo. The Chilean dug deep to defeat Francesco Passaro in three sets. Tabilo dropped the first set and was pegged back in the second by Passaro after establishing a 3-0 lead. He dominated the tiebreak in emphatic fashion, winning all seven points, before controlling the decider to win 4-6 7-6 (0) 6-2. Tabilo has now reached the quarter-final stage or better of his last three tournaments.
The Chilean has shown himself to be the more complete and dangerous player in these conditions, and if he is able to create openings at the start, he is likely to find a way to victory.
