Tereza Valentova overcame a stumble in the second set to win against Mary Stoiana in the first-round of the Cincinnati Open. Valentova dominated the first set and the match looked over as she opened up a 4-1 lead in the second. However, Stoiana broke back as Valentova was serving for the match and forced a tiebreak. The Czech regrouped to clinch a 6-2 7-6 (4) win after one hour and 37 minutes.
She now faces Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian continued her brilliant season as she made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Canadian Open. Svitolina beat the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Ekaterina Alexandrova, before a defeat to six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the last four.
