This is Terence Atmane's fourth Grand Slam appearance, but he is yet to register a victory on the biggest stage having previously suffered three first-round exits.

With some promising results on hard courts last year though, namely a run to the semi-finals of the 1000-rated Cincinnati Open, the Frenchman will be quietly confident of breaking his major duck in Melbourne.

Standing in his way is a man appearing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, with 23-year-old Italian Francesco Maestrelli having come through qualifying.

Maestrelli won a Challenger event on hard courts in November, and claimed the notable scalps of Thiago Seyboth Wild and Dusan Lajovic in the aforementioned Australian Open qualifiers.

This looks like it could be a highly competitive first-round encounter between two players who have reason to be confident, and it is a match that is unlikely to be decided in straight sets.
