Terence Atmane picked up a brilliant victory in round one of the Washington Open as he came from a set down to beat Frances Tiafoe. Atmane had lost all three of their previous meetings in 2026, but he recovered to win 4-6 6-3 6-4 against the sixth seed. This ended a three-match losing run for the Frenchman.
He will now face Alejandro Tabilo for a place in the quarter-finals. Tabilo added to Tallon Griekspoor’s woes this season as he defeated the Dutchman in three sets. Tabilo had suffered an early defeat in the Estoril Open a week earlier, but he raised his level in the deciding set to see off Griekspoor, winning 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-4.
Atmane will take great confidence from how he closed out the match against Tiafoe, and he may look to rush Tabilo by taking the ball early and playing aggressively. Tabilo should be able to rely on his consistency and ability to extend rallies until opportunities appear.
