THE PREDICTION

World number 67 Zhizhen Zhang grabbed the biggest ranking win of his career with an incredible five-set victory over last summer’s US Open runner up Casper Ruud. The 26-year-old has already played 10 sets of tennis in New York after ousting J.J. Wolf in similar fashion on Monday but whilst fatigue could be a factor in this first meeting with Rinky Hijikata he remains the solid favourite. 22-year-old Hijikata is through to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time on his US Open debut after a surprisingly one-sided victory over an out-of-sorts Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday. The Aussie has already enjoyed a few huge days at Grand Slams, not least winning the Australian Open Men’s Doubles with Jason Kubler in January, but this looks a step too far against a rapidly improving player in Zhang. Hijikata stands more of a chance the longer this takes considering the Chinese’s run so far but back Zhang to win outright here.
