World number nine Andrey Rublev beat Laslo Djere in straight sets on Monday in his first match for almost a month since his gut-wrenching defeat to Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals of the US Open. The 24-year-old has won three ATP titles this season, taking his career total to 11, but his best tennis still seems to be out of his grasp in 2022, with a break after New York likely doing him good. World number 125 Zhizhen Zhang qualified well to make the Astana Open main draw and he stunned an out-of-sorts Aslan Karatsev from a set down on Monday to take some real momentum into this first meeting with the fifth seed. Rublev should have more than enough to reach the quarter-finals but it would not be a huge surprise to see a decider here. Back the Russian to win outright for caution’s sake.
