World number 51 Yulia Putintseva has grabbed a few eye-catching results this season but she comes into the Italian Open in poor form with four defeats from her last six. The 28-year-old has at least won each of her last two first round matches on clay, her favoured surface, to look the reasonable favourite in this first meeting with Viktoriya Tomova but the Hungarian should not be underestimated after qualifying well as the top seed this week. Tomova, also 28, is just three places behind her career-high WTA world ranking of 73rd and she has already surpassed that in the live rankings. It is always difficult to predict what version of Putintseva will take to court but her last two defeats have come from top 20 opponents and she should be able to come through here unscathed as the outright winner.
