World number three Paula Badosa is coming off a promising run to the semi-finals of the Silicon Valley Classic last week where she beat in-form Coco Gauff before losing to eventual champion Daria Kasatkina. The 24-year-old claimed the third WTA title of her career at the start of this season in Sydney but her best tennis has come in fits and bursts since. World number 46 Yulia Putintseva has also been a little erratic this season and the 27-year-old had to come back from a set down to beat wildcard Katherine Sebov on Tuesday and avoid a big upset. If Badosa comes to Toronto in the form she left San Jose, this should be a fairly one-sided contest. The Spaniard beat Putintseva in straight sets at the Miami Open back In March to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head record and she can be backed to make that 3-0 here, probably in two sets once again.
