World number 38 Yulia Putintseva has suddenly found some serious form over the last few weeks, stunning the likes of Paula Badosa and Alison Riske this month leading up to a huge straight-sets victory over Amanda Anisimova on Tuesday. The 27-year-old saved 13 break points against the 24th seed in the first round and she has been rewarded with a seed’s draw moving forward, although 23-year-old Jule Niemeier is a dangerous opponent. The German should be ranked well inside the top 60, even 50, on tour after reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July and she ousted a former Grand Slam champion in Sofia Kenin without dropping a set on her US Open debut. This looks closer than it may appear and with sets likely to go both ways the shrewd move could well be taking the German to win at least one here as a serious rising star. The suitably cautious addition to an accumulator should be at least a set for Putintseva, though.
