World number 41 Ajla Tomljanovic was in control against Lesia Tsurenko before the Ukrainian was forced to retire from their second set in the round of 16. The 28-year-old is a great all-court player with a solid game for the clay but so is world number 51 Yulia Putintseva who is also yet to drop a set this week in Istanbul. 27-year-old Putintseva has beaten the tougher opponents this week on clay and she leads Tomljanovic 2-1 in their tour-level head-to-head record after winning their two most recent meetings. All three of their matches have come on hardcourts, most recently in three sets at the Silicon Valley Classic last season, and three looks likely once again here. Given their record, taking Putintseva to win at least a set looks the sensible move here.
