THE PREDICTION
World number 54 Yoshihito Nishioka jumped over 40 places in the ATP world rankings last week after a superb and totally unexpected run to the final of the Washington Open. The 26-year-old lost to Nick Kyrgios in straight sets on Sunday but he overcame five top 40 players to get there, including world number eight Andrey Rublev, in by far the most impressive run of results in his career and he started here in Montreal strongly with a straight-sets victory over the ailing Benoit Paire. This looks a serious test for world number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime, who comes in to the Canada Masters under huge pressure to perform as a Montreal native. The Canadian turned 22 on Monday, two days after losing to Cam Norrie in the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open, and he will receive a hero’s welcome to Centre Court on Wednesday.
To further muddy the waters, Nishioka leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after winning their first two meetings. Auger-Aliassime should be bolstered by the occasion here but the Japanese is in the form of his career, all of a sudden, and this could end up a thriller. Back the Canadian to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors and leave the winner up to chance, particularly as nerves could mean a choppy start for the youngster.
