THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Yoshihito Nishioka will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 45th no matter the outcome of the Korea Open final, his second tour final in as many months. After well over a year of poor form the Japanese number one stormed to the Citi Open final in August via five-straight victories over top 40 players but in some ways he has bettered that this week in Seoul by stunning the top seed and world number two Casper Ruud for a career-best result. Nishioka overcame lucky loser Aleksandar Kovacevic on Saturday in three sets to cap off a stellar campaign and he beat Denis Shapovalov in three sets in their only previous encounter, albeit four years ago at the Shenzhen Open. World number 24 Shapovalov defeated Jenson Brooksby on Saturday to reach the final without dropping a set but facing a fellow left-hander does limit some of his potent shot-making here.
Nishioka lost the Citi Open to a big-server in Nick Kyrgios and he will face a similar prospect in the powerful Canadian. Shapovalov has lost each of his last three finals on tour whilst Nishioka has lost his last two, with both players aiming for the second title of their careers. Given his previous win against Shapovalov and his results this week, backing Nishioka to take at least a set looks like the suitably cautious call in this difficult but likely thrilling final.
