World number 35 Nikoloz Basilashvili is riding a five-match losing streak into the first round of the US Open that stretches back to a third round loss to Tim van Rijthoven at Wimbledon. The 30-year-old owns a poor 12-24 record for 2022 as his already erratic form continues to depreciate but he remains a dangerous opponent to draw at a Grand Slam with five sets allowing for more time to navigate his peaks and troughs. This still looks a huge opportunity for 22-year-old Yibing Wu, though, who qualified well this week to make his Grand Slam debut at the US Open. Wu will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 155th no matter the outcome here but the Chinese prospect has won three Challenger titles on US hardcourts in a row since the start of June and backing him to win at least two sets could be the shrewdest move of the round.
