26-year-old Tallon Griekspoor will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 43rd without playing a match at the Kitzbuhel Open after he received a last-minute bye to the round of 16 in a seeding shake up. The Dutchman could break the top 40 with a deep run here and a victory over rising clay star Holger Rune at last week’s Hamburg Open suggests he could do so, with this first meeting against Yannick Hanfmann a winnable opener in Austria. World number 140 Hanfmann was in control against Gerald Melzer before the Austrian had to retire in the second set of their match on Tuesday and the German will feel confident in his abilities on his favoured surface to provide an upset here. Griekspoor’s best tennis could yet come across the North American hardcourt swing but he has performed well enough on clay this season to suggest he should come through here.
