World number three Maria Sakkari overcame Tatjana Maria in three sets on Monday in revenge for the German’s shock victory over her at Wimbledon last month. 27-year-old Sakkari reached the semi-finals here last season in what has so far proved to be her best year on tour, where she lost to the eventual champion Emma Raducanu. The Greek has been struggling to properly impose herself on a tournament for some time, perhaps ever since reaching a first Masters final at Indian Wells back in March, and in-form Xiyu Wang is a serious threat in this first meeting. The 21-year-old came back from a set down to beat Diane Parry on Monday and she could break the top 70 for a first time no matter the outcome of what is the biggest match of her career. The Chinese rising star has upset the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Barbora Krejcikova in recent months but with both of those players currently well below their best Sakkari still looks the solid favourite here. Three sets is a distinct possibility, though, making an outright pick for the Greek the suitably cautious move.
