World number eight Jessica Pegula looks a serious outsider for at least a deep run at the US Open after reaching the quarter-finals of both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros this season. The 28-year-old also reached a first Masters final at the Madrid Open but she is at her best on a hardcourt, on which she has lost to both Masters champions this month with a semi-final defeat to Simona Halep in Toronto and a quarter-final exit to Caroline Garcia in Cincinnati.
THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Viktorija Golubic set a career-high WTA world ranking of 35th as recently as February but much of her ranking points from her best season on tour last year have fallen away now to see her come to new York at 89th. The Swiss is at her best on grass, on which she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon last year, but she has never made it past the first round at either the US Open or Australian Open. This should be a fairly straightforward win for Pegula, who can be backed to win in two.
