This time last season an 18-year-old Emma Raducanu was an unknown teenager who impressed Wimbledon selectors enough at the Nottingham Open and an ITF event a week later to hand her a wildcard to the main draw at SW19. One year on from a first round defeat to Harriet Dart, 19-year-old Raducanu is at a career-high WTA world ranking of 11th with the 2000 ranking points behind her from a run to the US Open title in September, built off the back of blossoming at Wimbledon in her run to the round of 16. Raducanu became the first qualifier to win the US Open and she did so without dropping a set, making for a very steep benchmark to have to live up to for the rest of her career.
Since then, the Brit has struggled as much with injury as form on the WTA tour, on which she will mark just a first anniversary when she takes to court as the second seed in Nottingham to face Viktorija Golubic for a first time. World number 55 Golubic is currently performing below par by the standards she set herself in a stellar season last year, especially on grass on which she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. The 29-year-old could be a dark horse for the title in Nottingham is she provides the upset here but the main foe for Raducanu is her own fitness this week. The Brit will likely not risk anything ahead of Wimbledon and that makes this match a potential bust. If fit and firing, Raducanu can win this contest in two tight sets, although the outright pick is more sensible.
