THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Victoria Azarenka has won eight Masters titles amongst her career-total of 21 WTA titles, all coming on her favoured hard surface. The former world number one and two-time Australian Open champion has finished runner-up at the Madrid Open twice before in 2011 and 2012 but clay is her least effective surface, especially these days. World number 39 Viktorija Golubic won her only WTA title to date on clay at the Gstaad Open back in 2015 but the Swiss enjoyed her best season on tour last year with a run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and a Gold Medal in the Women’s Doubles at the Tokyo Olympic Games. Golubic and Azarenka, surprisingly, have never met on tour but recent results suggest backing the Swiss to take at least a set is the sensible move in leaving the winner up to chance. This will be Azarenka’s first match on clay since Roland-Garros last June.
