Former world number one Victoria Azarenka overcame a tough opening draw at the Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over Viktorija Golubic. The 32-year-old has struggled for consistent form in recent months and with just one of her 21 WTA titles coming on the clay she is at her least effective on this surface. Two-time Australian Open champion Azarenka did reach two Masters final son clay, though, at the Italian Open in 2013 and here two years before.

World number 24 Tamara Zidansek was assured in a straight-sets victory over Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Thursday, back where she belongs on her favoured clay, The Slovenian won a first WTA title on the surface at last season’s Lausanne Open soon after a stunning run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros was ended by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
THE PREDICTION
Tamara Zidansek beat Victoria Azarenka in their first ever meeting on tour in straight sets at the Monterrey Open back in 2020 and this looks another tough draw for the Belarusian. It is never wise to side against former world number one Azarenka but Zidansek is supremely comfortable on the clay and her 1-0 lead in their head-to-head makes backing her to win at least a set the sensible move here.
