This will be a fascinating ninth edition of a storied rivalry between two former world number ones and the head-to-head record could not be closer at 4-4. Pliskova claimed their most recent meeting in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open back in 2019, with Azarenka leading 2-1 on hardcourt meetings after wins at Indian Wells in 2016 and the Miami Open in 2018. Both players have endured under-par seasons but very recent results suggest Pliskova should have enough behind her world-class serve to outlast Azarenka. The Belarussian has suddenly found some welcome form, though, and confidence makes her dangerous. The sensible pick is backing Pliskova to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors but the Czech should find a way through.
