Former world number one Victoria Azarenka beat old foe Andrea Petkovic in straight sets on Wednesday in a more assured performance than a dodgy opener against Ana Bogdan. The two-time Australian Open champion has always been at her least effective on clay but that has not stopped her reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros way back in 2013, admittedly at the peak of her powers, the same season she also finished runner-up in Rome. 24-year-old Jil Teichmann could break the top 20 for a first time with a few more rounds at the French Open after some insatiable form on her favoured surface. The Swiss reached the semi-finals of the Madrid Open and the quarter-finals of the Italian Open this month and she has so far been assured in two straight-set wins over Bernarda Pera and Olga Danilovic in Paris. Azarenka made the round of 16 here last season for the first time since 2013 whilst Teichmann is blazing a trail with her first wins at this tournament. That makes backing the experience of Azarenka to win at least a set here the wise move in leaving a winner up to chance.
