THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Paula Badosa began to really evolve into the player she is today this time last season with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open. The Spaniard is up to a career-high world number two after an incredible 2021 saw her win her first WTA title just later that month at the Serbia Open, reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros soon after and end the year with a first Masters title won at Indian Wells before reaching the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on debut. Badosa is probably the most complete player on clay on the WTA tour, perhaps aside from world number one Iga Swiatek, and the pair look set to battle it out over this swing across several tournaments. This is a seriously tough opening draw against world number 25 Veronika Kudermetova, though, with the Russian coming off a runners-up finish, her third this season, at the Istanbul Open from Sunday.
