World number 29 Veronika Kudermetova was in control of her third round encounter with Paula Badosa before the Spaniard was forced to retire from their second set. 25-year-old Kudermetova won the Italian Open Women’s Doubles alongside Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova last time out for some excellent form on clay coming in and she has thrice finished runner-up on tour this season, including on clay at the Istanbul Open.
MADISON KEYS
World number 22 Madison Keys produced a stunning comeback victory over Elena Rybakina on Saturday in a real statement of intent at Roland-Garros. The 27-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this season before losing to eventual champion Ash Barty and she won her sixth WTA title before that at Adelaide 2. Former world number seven Keys also made the semi-finals here back in 2018, with her best showing at this level a runners-up finish to Sloane Stephens at the US Open the year before.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Monday in a first meeting between Veronika Kudermetova and Madison Keys. Kudermetova would have been a s=fairly solid backer before this week in Paris as the Russian has been incredibly consistent so far in 2022 but Keys’ victory over the 16th seed Rybakina on Saturday suggests she may actually have the edge now. The American has been here and done it before whilst Kudermetova is through to the second week of a Slam for the first time. Backing Keys to win at least a set based on her experience seems reasonable.
